Ingredients for Marshmallow Cake Recipe

  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
  • 2 cups flour
  • 3 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon cream of tarter
  • Dash of salt
  • 1/2 cup whole milk
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla
  • 4 egg whites
  • 1 cup mini marshmallows, optional
  • 1 recipe marshmallow filling


  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
  2. Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  3. Cream together shortening and sugar.
  4. Sift together dry ingredients (flour, baking powder, cream of tarter, salt).
  5. Add vanilla to milk.
  6. Alternate adding small amounts of milk/vanilla and dry ingredients to shortening and sugar, stirring well to combine.
  7. Beat egg whites until stiff peaks form.
  8. Fold egg whites into prepared batter until just combined.
  9. Fold in optional mini marshmallows, if desired.
  10. Divide evenly between prepared baking pans.
  11. Bake for 30 minutes, until a toothpick inserted in the center of the cake comes out clean.
  12. Cool in pans on wire racks for about 20 minutes. Then, remove cake from pans and allow to cool fully.
  13. Spread marshmallow filling between layers and top with your favorite icing.
  14. Decorate with miniature marshmallows, if desired.
