Fresh Homemade Donuts

Homemade donuts are incredibly delicious and making them yourself can be a lot of fun. These three recipes will have you baking them at home in no time.

Baked Donut Recipe

This recipe produces classic baked donuts and yields about 1 dozen, depending on size.

Ingredients

  • 1 package yeast
  • 1/3 cup warm water
  • 1/3 cup scalded milk
  • 3 tablespoons sugar
  • 3 tablespoons shortening
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon lemon flavoring
  • 2 and 1/3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F.
  2. Add the warm water to a small bowl. Sprinkle the yeast into the water and let it dissolve.
  3. In another small bowl, stir the scalded milk together with the sugar and shortening.
  4. Beat the egg into the yeast mixture and then stir in the lemon flavoring.
  5. In a medium-size bowl, stir the nutmeg and salt into the flour.
  6. Pour the yeast mixture into a large bowl. Alternate adding the milk mixture and flour mixture to it, stirring between each addition, until all ingredients are used.
  7. Cover the bowl and let the dough double in size.
  8. Turn the dough onto a floured board and knead it for about 1 minute.
  9. Roll the dough about 1/2 inch thick and then cut out donuts with a round cookie cutter. Leftover dough may be pressed together and cut again.
  10. Place donuts about 2 inches apart on a greased cookie sheet.
  11. Bake for 15 minutes or until they turn golden brown. Remove from oven and transfer to a baking rack.
  12. Sprinkle warm donuts with powdered sugar or let them cool and then frost them with icing or buttercream frosting.

Homemade Glazed Autumn Pumpkin Donuts

Donut Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 cup white sugar
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cup milk
  • 2 eggs, beaten
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon melted shortening

Icing Ingredients

  • 1 cup confectioners' sugar
  • 2 tablespoons hot water
  • 1/2 teaspoon almond extract

Baking Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 325 degrees F.
  2. In a large bowl, stir together the flour, sugar, baking powder, nutmeg, cinnamon, and salt.
  3. In a separate bowl, stir together the milk, eggs, vanilla, and shortening until smooth.
  4. Fill each cup of a greased muffin tin 2/3 full with batter. Alternatively, use a donut baking pan.
  5. Bake 8 to 10 minutes or until donuts turn golden.

Icing Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, combine the confectioner's sugar, hot water, and almond extract
  2. Stir until smooth and then ice the donuts.
  3. Allow donuts to sit until the icing sets.

Chocolate Donut Recipe

Chocolate lovers will appreciate these donuts flavored with cocoa. The recipe yields about 1 dozen.

Donut Ingredients

  • 1 and 1/2 cup flour
  • 1/3 cup unsweetened baking cocoa
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 2/3 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 2 tablespoons butter, melted

Glaze Ingredients

  • 1 cup confectioner's sugar
  • 2 tablespoons hot water

Donut Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 325 degrees F.
  2. Whisk together flour, cocoa, salt, and baking powder.
  3. Separately, blend the eggs, sugar, and vanilla until smooth.
  4. Stir in the milk and butter.
  5. Slowly stir milk mixture into flour until smooth.
  6. Grease a muffin tin and fill holes 2/3 with batter. You could also opt to use a donut pan.
  7. Bake for 8 to 10 minutes. Donuts should spring back up when gently poked with a finger.
  8. Remove from oven and let cool.

Glaze Instructions

  1. Stir together the confectioner's sugar and hot water.
  2. After donuts cool and are removed from tin, drizzle glaze over each one.

Make a Good Donut Even Better

Donuts are good even when they are plain, but the right toppings can take them from good to great. Experiment with different glazes and icings as well as flavored frostings, sprinkles, nuts, bacon bits, and whatever else your imagination comes up with. Who needs to visit the bakery when you can do it all from the comfort of your own kitchen?
